At Effect Therapy Community Support Services, we believe that mental wellness is not a luxury — it’s a right. Texas is facing a behavioral health crisis, but there’s also a growing wave of solutions, support, and progress.
What Is Behavioral Health?
Behavioral health refers to how our daily cognitive habits, emotional responses, and actions impact our overall well-being. It includes mental health conditions like depression or anxiety, as well as substance use disorders, trauma responses, emotional regulation, and more.
The Current Landscape in Texas
Texas is one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S., but behavioral health services haven’t kept up with demand:
- 1 in 5 adults in Texas experience mental illness each year.
- Only 35% of children with mental health needs receive treatment.
- Over 200 counties in Texas are designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas.
- Long wait times, limited providers, and cultural stigmas keep many from accessing care.
Why the System Is Strained
Many Texans — especially in rural areas — struggle to find nearby or affordable behavioral health services. In some regions, it can take months to see a provider. Lack of insurance coverage, transportation barriers, and cultural stigma only make things harder.
For kids and teens, the challenges are especially urgent. Undiagnosed and untreated issues in childhood can lead to long-term academic, social, and emotional harm.
A Turning Point: New Investment and Reform
Texas lawmakers recently approved over $11 billion in funding for behavioral health, the largest investment of its kind in state history. This will support:
- Telehealth expansion for rural and low-income families.
- School-based mental health programs to identify and support students in crisis.
- Workforce development to increase the number of licensed counselors and therapists.
- Community-based resources like Effect Therapy that bridge the gap between clinical care and home environments.
